GHOSTS OF YIN-JIN
DONGREN (THE WINTER PEOPLE)
The Winter People are a quiet mysterious race only plentiful in the far away northern city of Chaofeng. The Dong are a byproduct of the Xia intermarrying with the Sherpa Mountain Folk. They take their sturdiness from the mountain folk, while they inherited a quiet graceful step from the Xia. The Dongren along with the Sherpa are largely marginalized, due in no small part to their intense secretiveness and closed nature. The Winter People are a matriarchal society, and one of the few places in Yin-Jin that women see true equality. Many Dong women marry into the Qiu clans living on the northern steppe, these are often referred to as “winter-wives”. The winter wives have a condition upon marriage that they be free to travel to Chaofeng every fifth winter. No one knows for what purpose and outsiders are not permitted to their gatherings. The Dong are a small slender people with deep set eyes. A peculiar trait amongst them is that a girls hair will turn silvery-white at puberty, while a boys hair gets a white streak, a condition completely unique to them. The Dong claim it is a gift from the gods, others see them as witches. Despite that, many Dong women are sought out as brides, for it is well known they may control their conception, and even predetermine the sex of the child, a powerful incentive for a society that places so much value on male heirs.
